Incorporated on August 18, 1906, Chatsworth is the county seat of Murray County and home to a population of approximately 4,000 residents who enjoy the gorgeous seasonal weather that brings hot, humid summers, cool, wet winters, and lovely mild weather during the springtime and fall.
The city of Chatsworth sits beneath the peaks of Fort Mountain State Park at the western edge of Chattahoochee National Forest amidst some of the most beautiful scenery in the Northwest Georgia High Country. The city and surrounding county are rich in history and feature a number of important historical sites of interest. Historic buildings of note include the Murray County Courthouse, circa 1917, an impressive two-story red brick structure of Neoclassical Revival architecture located in the downtown district. The Chief Vann House, circa 1804, was home of Cherokee Chief James Vann, a powerful and influential leader of the Cherokee Nation.
Outdoor enthusiasts will find numerous opportunities for outdoor sports and recreation in and around the city of Chatsworth. Just to the east of the city is Fort Mountain State Park. This 3,712-acre expanse of parkland that was founded in 1938 and named for a primeval 885-foot long rock wall located at its peak. The park offers guests a myriad of activities that include hiking, mountain biking, fishing, boating, golfing, off-roading, geocaching, tennis, birding, picnicking, and camping. Located approximately twenty-miles northeast of Chatsworth is the Cohutta Wilderness and Wildlife Management Area, a rugged forested region that features outstanding opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and camping. Also popular with anglers and boaters is Carters Lake, a 3,200-acre recreational lake with sixty-two miles of shoreline situated at the southern edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The pride and community spirit of Chatsworth is evident in the numerous festivals and special events hosted by the city each year. Popular events include the Appalachian Wagon Train, a ten-day event sponsored by the Murray County Saddle Club that features a parade, nightly dances, trail rides, horse shows, barrel racing, livestock and tack auctions; and the Black Bear Festival, held each October, with music, arts & crafts, hayrides, a children's petting zoo, and 5K race!
